Site inspection and waste sampling conducted at Rumah Susun, Jakarta |

Last June 15, 2009, AsiaBIO and the Mercy Corps team conducted a site inspection at the Rumah Susun housing complex in Penjaringan area, one of the largest slum areas in Jakarta. The preliminary inspection was done in preparation for a planned community waste-to-energy facility that will generate electricity and fuel for cooking. It will be a communal biogas system (anaerobic digester) that will use household food waste and septage as main feedstock. Recently, a waste sampling was jointly conducted by AsiaBIO and Mercy Corps in the area.
On August 11, 2009, a follow-up site inspection was conducted by the AsiaBIO/PhilBIO engineering team represented by PhilBIO COO, Engineer Abet Pascua and Project Engineer Bert Abug. The technical visit was to determine the appropriate design of the biogas system that will be installed at the Rumah Susun Penjaringan area.

AsiaBIO holds coordination meeting with Mercy Corps |

A coordination meeting between AsiaBIO and Mercy Corps was held on June 18, 2009 at the Mercy Corps office in Jakarta. The group discussed specific roles and activities for the proposed community biogas project at the Rumah Susun Penjaringan area in Jakarta. Representing Mercy Corps were Sean Granville-Ross, Country Director; Doddy Suparta, Infrastructure and Quality Control Advisor; and Indrawan Prabaharyaka, Research Assistant. The AsiaBIO team were represented by Arif Hasyim and Irma Larona. After the meeting, the group visited a Mercy Corps community biogas project in Cengkareng, West Jakarta. |

Experience on communal biogas project presented at ITB Bandung conference |

The experience of AsiaBIO/PhilBIO in developing a community biogas project was presented during the International Conference on Sustainable Energy held at the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) Campus in Bandung, Indonesia on June 16, 2009. AsiaBIO CSR Consultant, Irma Larona, presented a paper entitled, "Technology Adaptation: Communal Biogas System for Livestock Farming Communities". She discussed the case of the communal biogas project in Batangas City, Philippines. |

AsiaBIO and Samdhana explore potential Aceh projects |

Potential community biogas projects for Aceh were discussed in an exploratory meeting between AsiaBIO and the Samdhana Institute last June 19, 2009 at the Asia Biogas-Indonesia office in Jakarta. Possible projects discussed were biogas projects for cow farms and palm oil plantations. Present during the meeting were Neni Rochaeni Kadarjati, Samdhana Grants Manager; Bilal Rekha Pahlevi, Samdhana's Community Facilitator for Banda Aceh; and Irma Larona of AsiaBIO. |

Communal biogas project generates electricity in Batangas, Philippines |

Last March 18, 2009, PhilBIO and AsiaBIO commissioned the communal biogas system and power plant at Barangay Sorosoro, Batangas City, Philippines. The project site is a community of about 50 backyard hog raisers who are contract growers of the Sorosoro Ibaba Development Cooperative (SIDC), the local project cooperator. The biogas system now supplies electricity for the SIDC administration building to help enhance the cooperative's various livelihood activities. The inauguration ceremony of the biogas system was part of the 40th anniversary celebration of SIDC. |
